School Daze

 This was a part of the program where we all had to get casted to get moulds of our face. I just discovered what it felt to feel claustrophobia. You only had a little hole to breathe out of. You're not seeing it but a classmate was holding my hand.

These were our teachers Mr. Celaya and Danny. Look at that nose peeking out. After the  plaster is applied and set it is taken off and a mixture is poured in to cast the impression and then placed in a convection oven to be baked. When that is done it would be our responsibility to pry the cast of baked cement out and start working.

It's just like a great facial because all the properties are natural, this is what we call an algae cast.

I know it might appear as if I have no ability to breathe but I do, there's a tiny hole there, somewhere.

School Daze

As I had mentioned earlier, I had embarked on my journey to expand my horizons learning more about makeup and special effects. I have had interest in working on film sets and believed that learning how to do special effects would enhance me professionally. During the beauty portion we were taught that the hardest makeup was "Clean Beauty", that is where one appears flawless without looking as if they are wearing makeup. This area really helped me as I learned in depth about color theory whiched increased my ability to cancel out color undertones in the skin that can show up when a person is put in front of a high definition camera. After each session we were placed in front of the camera to be examined to see if we achieved that flawless look.

The beauty part of the program as I came to realised was the building block for my special effects program. In beauty we had to learn how to take out color and in special effects you had to learn how to put in color to make it realistic. These two certainly went hand in hand.

For instance we were taught how to make a bald cap from scratch and to apply and color to blend perfectly with the skin. Check out these pics.

 My victim for the day was Mirla she came from Aruba for the program . The day before we were busy making our bald caps from scratch getting prepped for the the application. We had to fit the cap and glue it in place and feather the ends so that it would blend seamlessly into the skin.



This is the application of the base color which we use as the foundation color  before we match her skin tone with the foundation. This is where putting in color comes in to get the bald cap to look realistic.

Flash Back

Looking back at snippets of my days at Joe Blasco in Orlando. I remember my first day I didn't know anyone and I was excited about the curriculum that was for 3 intensive months 9-5pm everyday. In the mornings we had lectures from our teachers and guest artists and then we went to practicals. The first part of the program was beauty and the 2nd was Special effects. I really learnt the craft and sometimes when you you are in the moment you don't realise how much you are taking in until you have left. It was truly a wonderful experience.

This was my first week and we were taught the value of presentation. It was a requirement to wear our smocks at all times, those were the good old days.

We were always goofing around, I never missed a day because when you missed a day you missed a ton. Tweet
