Embracing Deep lips!

Even though we were loving our fuchsias and bright oranges, it's time to trade them in for deep lips. Not to worry Spring is around the corner but for now it is all about the rich hues of berries and plums this season. I came across this picture and felt that it illustrated that dark lips will work for even the most doubtful. If you want to step out and venture on the "dark" side here are some tips to getting sexy dark lips.
  1. It's always great to exfoliate your lips to remove the dead cells so the lipstick application goes on smoothly.
  2. Priming your lip with either foundation or a lip primer is great for neutralizing your lip natural lip color. It also helps the lipstick to adhere better to the lip giving it more longevity.
  3. For control apply lip color with a lip brush, this will allow for a more detailed application.
So have fun this season experimenting with dark lips!

    Nude Pouts101!

Fall 2011's nude, no makeup look is one of the hottest trends alongside the bold lip. It is important to know what nude lip color to select when wearing a nude lip color. Here are some tips for your nude pout!

    The Right Nude for you!

    •  For fair or pale skin: With lighter skin tones, avoid beige lipsticks, which will just wash you out. Instead, look to pink, peach, or pale apricot as your base shade. Tip: apply a lip liner in a color one shade darker than your natural tone to give your nude tone a brightened effect.
    • For the golden girls: If you've got lots of golden undertones in your skin, go for creamy, caramel-toned nudes and warm beiges. Avoid anything too cool, like grays or silver-toned shades.
    • For olive tones: If you've got olive skin, you're a lucky gal. Just about any nude shade will look great on you from beige to bronze to pinks.
    • For skin with yellow undertones: Think light, creamy-toned beiges like latte or mocha.
    • For dark-toned skin: Go for chocolate tones such as rich golden browns and coffees

    Prepping Your Lip!

    • make sure that your lips are well conditioned before you apply any type of color to them.
    • exfoliate at night before bed to remove all of the dead skin cells that are on the surface.
    The Application:
    • To apply your lipstick, begin with a layer of foundation over the surface of your lips
    • Apply your nude lipstick shade, and add a hint of gloss across the center of the lower lip to give your mouth a sexy pout.

How to wear your RED Lip!

This season it is all about how you wear your bold lip colors. Red lips will be everywhere this Fall and so we all need to be prepared to take them on, one lip at a time. Don't you agree? In order to be ready let's go over some tips that will be helpful as we are embark on our bold lip adventure.

Tip 1 - Take cues from your face.

    1. The paler the skin the , the bigger the pop.
    2. Go light on the eyes, take it easy with the blush ( you don't want competition)
Tip 2 - Line inside your lips
    1. Red lipstick has a tendency to bleed, so fill in lips with a liner first this helps to keep your color in check.
Tip 3 - Pick the right color
    1. If your complexion is pink with cool undertones, you will look better in plum shades.
    2. Girls with yellow undertones look great in warmer reds that have a brown base.
Tip 4 - Experiment with blending
    1. If you happen to purchase a shade that is either too bright or dark, don't throw it out, try blending shades from your other lip colors to get it to the right look.
Tip 5 - Go lighter is you are older
    1. As we age our lips get thinner, so if you have thin lips it is best to keep away from darker lipsticks as this will only enhance the thinness.  Try a Rosy red or avoid red all together wearing a neutral shade and opting to play up your eyes.

The Do's of Dark and Pretty Lips

DO pair gently stained lips with lots of mascara
makeup pro Melanie Inglessis says, “Apply lipstick with your ring finger for a less intense shade—the trick is to keep it from looking too perfect!

DO go super dark on deeper skin tones, check out Queen Latifah's shiney coco bean shade.

The shade of lipstick that you choose can make or break your look. If you have a cool complexion, choose dark colors with blue and purple undertones, like berry or bordeaux.

For a warm skin tone, look for coral and gold undertones, like brick and golden red.

    Not Sure
If you are a warm or a cool? Take a look at the veins of your inner wrist. If they look green you have a warm skin tone; blue veins mean you’re a cool.

    Lipstick Revelations!

There is a school of thought that suggests that the shape of our lipstick after a period of use usually reflects our personality. Some of us tend to have lipsticks that end up having either a flat top of slanted tip, based off how we apply our lipsticks. Take a quick inspection of your lipsticks and check out the shape then see what this chart says about your personality.
Let me know if your lipstick reflects the real you!

    Lavender Kisses!

I just had to share this lip color that captivated my attention. This look demonstrates the versatility of lavender lip color on both lighter and darker skin tones. This orchid purple adds a fun pop of color to the remaining weeks of Summer. As you can see it is a shade that can be worn on it's own or even with a dark smokey eye.
If you think it might be a bit too intense look for shades with pinker tones that still retains it's brightness.

    Tone it Down!

We all have occasions where we put on a lipstick and it literally is screaming right back at us and we need to just TONE it down a notch. I know I have come across some of those days. Here a few tips you can use when those moments occur.

A great color to tone down a lip color is pink. apply it to any red based color and it automatically changes the look. Another great color are nudes and browns and even golds . Sometimes you might find you have to mix in two colors to get the effect you want just pretend you are a chemist who is developing your own creation.

Another way to tone down your lip color is to blot your lips to remove the excess color and try mixing in a softer shade or maybe even darker depending on what effect you are going for to change up the look of your pout.

    Palette Ideas

There are so many ways we can get creative and store our makeup in the most unexpected things. If we take a look in our medicine cabinet or in our craft box I am sure some of us might find a container or two that we would never have thought would be useful.

    Pill Boxes
Pill boxes are a great way to store your lipsticks, all you have to do is cut off the top of your lip shades  or your half used lipsticks, mushing them in the compartments. This is a great way to build your own custom lip palette. You can also create your own custom shades by mixing two or more shades for your own statement color..
A great tip from Celeb artist Carmindy of TLC, she suggests filling one compartment with petroleum jelly with your old or favorite shade turning it into a lip gloss.

This 7 day pill box is handy to put in your purse so you have easy access to 7 or more shades of lip color in one case.

The different Faces of a Nude lip!

There are many ways you can wear a nude lip, these are just some of them just to give you some ideas. You can either use a nude lip pencil close to your lip color , fill in then add some gloss for a glossy nude look or a lipstick with a warm peachy tone for a matte effect. It all depends on the look you are going for at the moment. If you are out of lip pencils or lipsticks another way is to apply your foundation on your lip, set it with powder and then use a gloss over it or just leave it bare!

    Lipstick not just for lips!

Lipstick is a product that can be used other places than the lip, it can act as a blush if you are caught in a jam and have forgotten to apply blush. If you have a lipstick that is a shade deeper than your lips, just dot some on and blend just like you would your cream blush.

Having lipstick handy at times can be a life saver, it certainly saved my life when I was on a shoot. I remember I was on a particular shoot at the beach and I had only taken the bare essentials such as powder and lipstick just in case for a touch up. I had left the heavy kit behind in the crew bus because to walk on the sand with the case would have been horrific. I didn't realise the director had intentions of shooting the talent in the water and so I was not prepared in terms of the right kind of makeup for the face. I was about to panic as I knew I had left the cream shadows and blushes back in the bus.

As I was about to pass out from panic a light bulb went off in my head, I remembered I had the lipstick and it being of a wax like consistency I used it as a blusher on the cheek and applied on the lips and a touch of color on the eyes just for some color and it worked. You live and you learn and I learned that day to try and be prepared for anything. In some cases it does happen where you are caught in a spot just try to be creative and work with what you have at your disposal.
